The Deadliest Escape published in VG
December 14, 2021
My project on the deadliest migration route in the world, across the Mediterranean ocean, has been published as a five chapter story in VG. The chapters presents different aspects on the migration, such as the use of inflatable boats, the rescue done by NGOs, the reason for the more than 100.000 people crossing in 2021, the political aspects as well as stories on their dreams and what they bring in the boats.
I joined the MSF rescue ship "Geo Barents" in October 2021, and spent three weeks onboard, witnessing the rescue of five boats and almost 400 people. I also documented how the Libyan coastguard was hunting for the migrants at sea.
The project is written and photographed by me, designed by Simen Grytøyr and Torfinn Weisser and text editing by Svein Kjølberg.
